Regulatory Hiring Demand & Challenges

Hiring in Regulatory Affairs has remained strong in biotech, pharma, and diagnostics this year despite the ongoing pandemic and economic uncertainty. 

In order to understand companies’ Regulatory hiring plans for 2021 and their Regulatory hiring challenges, Dennis Partners conducted an online survey of industry executives, decision-makers, HR professionals, and Regulatory hiring managers during the week of November 2 – 6, 2020.   This study consisted of two questions as follows:

  1. Are you planning to hire Regulatory Affairs professionals in 2021? The results show that nearly 49% of respondents have plans to hire in Regulatory in 2021, while 41% do not.  25% of companies surveyed are planning to hire permanent Regulatory employees in 2021, while 18% plan to hire both permanent and contract Regulatory employees and just 5% plan to hire only contract Regulatory employees. Roughly 10% are still unsure of Regulatory hiring plans for 2021.

2. What are the biggest challenges you face when hiring Regulatory Affairs employees? While the results show that 20% of companies surveyed found that competing offers from other employers is a major challenge in hiring new employees, 13% struggled with the relocation/cost of living aspect, and just 3% have difficulty with candidates not interviewing well. A whopping 47% of companies responded that their biggest challenge was a lack of qualified candidates.

Several respondents provided their own answers that expanded on these challenges and included aspects relating to interviewing, qualifications, as well as a company’s ability to support remote work, such as:

“Not many candidates have strategic regulatory experience dealing with the RA authorities. Most of them look good on paper but lack practical experience.”

“Lack of qualified candidates and many candidates want to work remote (I don’t blame them)”

“Company does not have a corporate flexibility or remote working policy.”

“Identifying and attracting qualified candidates that fit the organization and budget”
